Feldman Method of Critical Analysis
The Feldman method is a four step method or critically examining a work of art.
- Step 1 - DESCRIBE: Statements regarding facts that you KNOW about the art work.
- Step 2 - ANALYZE: Statements regarding the elements and principles of art.
- Step 3 - INTERPRET: Statements regarding how you feel and what you think.
- Step 4 - JUDGE: Statements regarding if you like an artwork or not.
Step 1: Description
In step 1; 'description', you simply describe what you know to be general facts about the artist and the artwork. No feelings or judgments. The information on the label, the orientation (portrait or landscape) and a list of objects in the artwork are description statements. Examples of descriptive level statements:

In step 2; 'analysis,' you make statements about what you notice using the elements and principles of art. Examples of analysis level statements:

Step 3: Interpretation
In step 3; 'interpretation,' you make statements about what you THINK and what you FEEL about the work of art, based on things you notice in steps 1 & 2.
